New Curler Instructional Series

Whether you're a brand new curler just coming off a Learn To Curl event, or someone who's curled a league or two and is looking for a more structured way to learn the game, the Boise Curling Club is excited to host a four-week instructional series to help you hone your skills!

The goal of the instructional series is to equip participants with all the fundamentals of the game. Graduates will be able to confidently participate in future leagues, bonspiels or any other curling event, and know how to self-improve going forward as they gain experience in the game.

Each session will include off-ice instruction covering everything from rules, to game strategy, to delivery technique, followed by a longer on-ice portion consisting of drills and practice to apply and deepen the understanding of the techniques taught in the classroom. Both off- and on-ice portions will be taught by experienced curlers who love the game, and can provide useful feedback on the ice. Among the topics covered will be:

• In-depth explanation and practice of the flat-footed curling delivery
• The ABCs of curling (alignment, balance, curl)
• Full coverage of all rules of curling, including the free guard zone, what to do if you burn a rock, and how to self-officiate a game
• Effective sweeping, including open and closed sweeping form
• Delivery and shooting drills
• Roles and responsibilities of each position on a four-person team
• How to communicate as a team during play, including the Ferby system to indicate shot weight
• Strategy lessons, including how to play with hammer, without hammer, and how to decide on a goal for a curling end
• Strategy sessions on the ice, with instructor-led discussion on shot selections
• Takeout weights and how to choose the appropriate call for a desired outcome
• Takeout drills
• Curling etiquette during leagues and bonspiels

The instructional series will take place on four successive Sundays: October 13, October 20, October 27 and November 3, from 7pm to 9pm. The cost is $140 per person.
